I believe in Heaven, Hell and Purgatory and i believe Purgatory is the best example of the Mercy of God. I have read many books about NDE and i feel they are a way of God easing our fears of death. I believe true Death does not exist until you have your Particular Judgment and i have never heard of anyone having their Particular Judgment and then returning to life.

To the fellow that says there is no hell and that it is a tired old mythology, you are dead wrong. I have personally experienced the presence of Satan harassing me when I was breaking away from 40 years of living in mortal sin. He is real, hell is a reality. Read how many times Jesus mentions Gehenna. How many demons He delivers people from.
I do not doubt your NDE, but it doesn't square with God's revealed word.

That's the wrong question. The question is not, "Don't you ever wonder", but "What is the authoritative teaching of the Catholic Church.

The teaching of the Church as stated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church is as follows:

CCC.1030 .All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.

CCC.1031 .The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire:

As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.

CCC.1032 .This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: "Therefore [Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin."

From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead:

Let us help and commemorate them. If Job's sons were purified by their father's sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.

Thus, it has been the constant teaching of the Church that all souls in Purgatory eventually go to Heaven -- since they died in God's grace and friendship.

Hi,

Can anyhow help me understand why God is made out to be this mean being? I was brought up Catholic and scared into not sinning no matter how simple. Now that I have explored other Christian beliefs/masses I start to really wonder how much of those "sins" are really that bad?
God to me is the most wonderful thing imaginable, a being that protects you yet puts you through some of the best and worse situations possible. I believe everything happens for a reason and that there is a plan for all of us. I dont understand it half the time but that is the point sometimes. My life is in his hands, I trust that what is supposed to happen, will.
What gets me is all this Hell talk and talk of punishment... Yes, Ive made some bad decisions growing up but its never been out of malice, just immaturity. Does this mean I will be eternally punished?
I do not attend mass every sunday because I dont feel that going because "I feel like i'll get in trouble if i dont" is right...I go when I feel the need to connect on a deeper level.
Does this make me a bad Christian?
My step daughter is involved with a church that is on the verge of being a CULT! Am I wrong to criticize and worry about her because I dont agree with what they do and preach? Who is right after all? There are so many religions and beliefs these days that I have decided to have my own beliefs. I pray and talk to God almost every day... I feel he listens and I feel he has made things happen in my life. I feel he loves me for me. I really hope that my "sins" are not worthy of eternal hell or any amount of hell. But I suppose that is something I'll have to wait and see. I just hate the feeling of being AFRAID of death. How do I overcome this?

Many saints have been given the visions of Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory. By tradition the Apostle and Paul believed in it because they we taught it in the the synagoges, by the temple elders and scholars and was reenforce by Christ teachings.
You can even go into the Jewish Encyclopedia and they give a definition of Purgatory because even today as in ancient times they believe in Heaven, Hell and puratory. Even today during the Yon Kippor They give prayers for the Righteous dead.
The prayers we give for those in Purgatory, go with to Heaven and become prayers for us on Earth for our own salvation. No prayer is ever wasted in Heaven.
Like St. Bernadette's message; for those those who believe no explanation is nessary, and for those who don't believe no explanation is possible.
My prayers are with all who doubt, that one day they will believe in Christ and find peace and love in him and in his saints that pray for all of us, since they are our brothers and sisters in heaven.

No death experience, it was more Like St Paul's 2x4 over the head. The other things you said, came to me by way of divine revelation.. The 33 year old's in Heaven... I knew it, I have felt this, it was embedded in my mind a few years ago... Do you realize that it has been exactly 33 years since your experience? The #33 represents much, the truth for one, Jesus is the truth. Now the other thing was the date: 2/17.. Long ago God led me to Acts 2:17.. I advize you all to read it...

Hi,
I had a NDE in a Catholic Church. I was depressed and literally had given up. I said to God that I give up and asked him to be real.

I remember exhaling and my spirit left my body. I went to heaven and saw the light and faces that shone like the sun. God is all light and pure love there is no darkness in him. He is a magnet of love.

God let me see and feel that light and I was given hope. Believe me you don't want to miss it. Make sure you get there!

Interesting posts. My daughter had a NDE at the ripe old age of 1 day (she's now almost 4). Some of the posts seem to indictate the the NDE's were experienced through a filter of the persons' deeply held beliefs.

My daughter has recounted on several occasions, since about the age of 2 that she has "flown". She insists that it occurred on only one occasion. She recently brought up this incident about her "flying" and since she is an intelligent child, we wrote it off as a case of an overactive imagination. My daughter was born by emergency C-section in respiratory and cardiac arrest due to a pregnancy complication . When I first saw her in the hospital, she was being assisted to breathe by nursing staff members and I baptized her there and then. She made a full recovery and is an amazing kid. We have never discussed the circumstances of her birth in her presence. Even though only hours old, she described her NDE as having flown. When questioned about her "flying" she described it more as floating. When we questioned her as to the circumstances, she said it occurred when "I died". When asked what she was wearing, she says "I was wrapped in a blanket and naked". Again, she has never heard the detail of her entry into this world. She described God as a loving old grandfatherly type who told her he was there so she wouldn't be alone. He also told her that she would have to return because her "work" wasn't finished and that she was, in her words, "a new Gianna" (perhaps a reference to her baptism?). Out of the mouths of babes...literally.

If you had an actual NDE and didn't experience Hell, what about all of the NDEs that DID experience Hell? There are plenty of documented cases where people who had horrific accidents and were pronounce dead came back reporting hellish experiences. In any case, your experience may have been a lucid dream, and many people have those too, which are not actual glimpses into the world of the spirit.
